How to get a 2 year old excited? The Wiggles, of course!

Hello and happy Thursday! Inching every so close to the holiday weekend - do all of you have any fun plans?

While we're here in Florida, I'm trying to optimize not only my training time, but also fitting in work and of course entertaining Julia! Not an easy task but so far the first 24 hours have gone well! Other than Julia waking up just after 7am - seriously?!

I spent the morning paying bills, ordering a new queen size bed for the house here (we only have twin beds now!), getting Julia's birthday party invites addressed (can she REALLY be 2 in a month?! Wow), working, etc..So I needed a break!

We went with our neighbor Paula ("Auntie Pawda" to Julia) to her gym today and they hooked me up with a temporary membership there which is perfect for me. It's less than $3 a day and includes all the classes, equipment, day care and a lap pool. So thankful to have this so I don't fall behind on my training while I'm here! Today I was on the spin bike for an hour and 20 minutes and did about 24 miles (approx). I was a disgusting, sweaty mess, which Julia reminded me of when I picked her up ("Mommy sweaty!" she says).

It was still iffy weather here today so we stayed around home and played with Julia outside. Here she is with her water table (she is soaked):

Paula and I enjoyed an adult beverage while Julia played before the rain hit. It rained for about 10 minutes and now it's done- typical summer weather in Florida!

But the most exciting news of the day is that we're (Paula and Glenn) taking Julia to the Tampa Bay Rays baseball game on Sunday and they have a free concert after the game - with The WIGGLES! I know, you can hardly contain your excitement and jealousy, right!? I asked Julia if she wanted to go and she jumped up and down with a resounding "YEEEAAAAA!!!!" So cute. It is amazing that these gooney guys are now probably billionares because of kids like Julia:
(Google images)

Rob always questions why he didn't come up with a simple concept like this himself!

We're going to have a spaghetti feast for dinner here tonight with Paula and Glenn so a low key evening with good friends, food and wine! Can't beat it!

Until next time - here is a quote from one of The Wiggles songs...
Fruit salad...yummy, yummy!

Haha!! Have a great day!

First of 12 days as a "single mom" in Florida!

Oh hey, it's Wednesday! Hope you are all having a great day so far. For me, it has been a travel day!

Julia and I arrived at our house in Florida a couple of hours ago for a few days of R&R. I actually brought her last year for almost a month too - although Rob joined us for more than a week. This time, it looks like it's just us girls! Damn work stuff getting in the way of Rob's vaca time...

Julia did so well on the plane - I always panic when I'm flying solo with her but she was a trooper, just played with her books and the iPad! Here she is before we got on the plane:

We are excited to be here - Julia so much that she cashed out cold about 30 seconds into the ride from the airport! Here she is - poor thing was exhausted from being such a good traveler:

We have the world's smallest rental car too - it has 4 doors but not sure how! Her stroller barely fits so it will be interesting to get all the beach gear in! Ok so it's not as small as THIS car, but still...
I found this on Google - isn't it funny??

No big plans while we're here - just seeing some friends, doing the 4th of July thing, and getting some training in. Sounds like there may be another gym option for me that includes a lap pool - yay! (I'm easily amused!) Will check that out later today hopefully.

I may take today as a rest day - just depends on Julia, as I have to take her on my run with me. BUT I do need to get out so we'll see!

Sorry this is such a boooooring post. Hopefully I'll have something more witty to say tomorrow.

Enjoy the rest of your day! Here is a funny quote I found today (author unknown) - I felt this was fitting considering how much crap I had to bring JUST for Julia! Sheesh!

Those that say you can't take it with you never saw a car packed for a vacation trip.

Optimizing work-out time with a toddler who doesn't sleep in!

Good morning!

Our morning started early today - Julia was up just after 7am today - I should have known yesterday's 10:15 wake-up time was a fluke! Ugh. I was all dressed and ready to head down to bike on my trainer when I peeked in on her and she was standing up in her crib, wide awake. Well, alright then!

A lot of people have asked me how I train for my triathlons when I have a very active 2 year old running around, work, travel for work, and still stay sane. The short answer is wicked time management! I do the best I can each day depending on my work schedule and her demeanor. I can usually tell right off the bat if she's going to be needy or will want to play on her own. Today I could tell she was going to be a happy camper no matter what we did which is great.

So instead of giving up the bike ride this morning, I brought Julia downstairs with me, gave her breakfast, she played with her toys and watched her shows while I got an hour (about 18 miles) in on the trainer. She is still half asleep so she's pretty self-sufficient! Once she was done eating and I was done on the bike, I got her dressed and headed to the gym. We have an amazing child care center there and Julia loves it. So she got to play with her friends for about 2 hours while I ran (3.1 on the dreadmill in 23:56) and swam (1 mile, 28 minutes) and showered (best part of the morning!). A randomly ordered triathlon but I'll take it!

We grabbed lunch on the way home (gotta love Jimmy John's punch cards which gave me a FREE sub today!) and now she's reading books while I get some stuff done online. I'll put her down for a nap shortly so I can get packed for our trip tomorrow! I hope she behaves on the flight! Eek!

On a random note, the pictures were posted from my sprint triathlon 2 weeks ago. You can see them at www.sadlershots.com

Here is a great quote from Joe Paterno that I really like:

"The will to win is important, but the will to prepare is vital."

With that, I hope you have a great rest of your day!

Manic Monday after a lazy Sunday!

Happy Monday!

I hope you had a great rest of your weekend. Yesterday was a pretty lazy day for my family, which I think we all needed! We went to the store to get stuff for dinner and Julia was out cold within 2 minutes. I couldn't resist taking this picture:
She's so sweet. Thank goodness she napped!

We sat outside and did some work/research while Julia napped. Rob had decided to make homemade fried chicken for dinner - which was, of course, finger-lickin' good! (you didn't really think I wouldn't put that reference in, did you?!) He also made baked potatoes (which Julia also loved) and a salad. A great end to a lazy day. I didn't run or do anything - had a headache all day and decided it wasn't worth it.

So after a good night's sleep for all of us (Julia slept until almost 10:30 this morning - that is a new record for sure), I was ready to tackle Monday. I got up, made Rob's lunch, cleaned the kitchen, did 2 loads of laundry all before 7:15am!

Then since the Steelhead 70.3 is only 48 days away (yikes!), I need to pick back up on my training. So I got the trainer out in the basement again and got on the bike early this morning. Did a 1:15 minute ride, about 22 miles, and it felt good to be back in the saddle! I may swim later before Julia's swim lessons too and start getting more double workouts in whenever I can! But I'm donating blood later today, so that may not be a good idea!
I try to donate every time I'm eligible. I know they always need blood so please consider signing up to donate (here) - you never know who you may help!

Julia and I leave for Florida on Wednesday (Yay for some fun in the sun!) which means I won't really have a lap pool or my bike for 12 days. I will join a gym while I'm there and they have stationary bikes (and a daycare I can take Julia to for 2 hours a day!) which will suffice, but no pool. We have a pool by the house but it is small. I'll make it work...The good thing about Florida in July - the heat. Yes, you read that right - it is a GOOD thing! It will really help my training to get used to hot temps and humidity so I can be ready in August.

I'm really excited to get to Florida and see these lovely people - Glenn and Paula - better known as our Florida family. They are brother/sister and our neighbors on either side of our house. I can't wait to spend some time with them! Here we are at Jimmy Buffett in April:

I have a lot to do today and tomorrow to get ready for the trip, but we should be fine. I'm hoping Rob can come to Florida too but work is calling the shots right now and he may not be able to swing it. Boo.

I leave you with this quote, oddly from Newt Gingrich (random, no?)
Perseverance is the hard work you do after you get tired of doing the hard work you already did
Have a great day!

Off to the races...a 10 miler AND another 70.3!

Good Sunday morning! I hope you have had a great weekend so far.

I'm convinced that Mother Nature has a bit of a bi-polar disorder, as it was barely 65 degrees with a cold rain on Friday. What I would deam fairly miserable, actually, but I still took Julia for a play date at the park in the morning with a couple of friends and their kids. We braved the rain and puddles and the kids had a blast, although us moms were frozen and soaked! After that I took Julia to get our race packets for Saturday's 10 mile Solstice Run. I took Friday off from running to see if it would help my foot which was a good decision!

Oh and did I mention I took the plunge and signed up for the Steelhead Half Ironman in Benton Harbor on August 14th! EEK!!! I'm really excited but nervous too! Here is the link to it.

So let the training resume - less than 7 weeks to go!

Friday evening I went to a fundraiser for a friend of a friend, whose daughter has a very rare condition in addition to cerebral palsy and epilepsy and high medical bills. She was such a sweet little girl and it broke my heart knowing how much this family had endured. Made me really feel very lucky to have such a healthy toddler - put things in prospective of how precious life really is.

Julia and I headed home and got to sleep to be ready for my 5:45 wake-up call for the race!
I went and picked up Megan (her blog here!) and we were off to Northville. As we drove I noticed the mile 1 marker...on the top of this VERY large hill. So this is how it's going to be, huh? Well, alright then. It was a perfect morning for a race overall though - cool, overcast but a bit windy.

We found my friends John, Serena and Dan at the start so it was nice to see familiar faces. Serena ran the 10k (which started before us) and we were able to cheer her on...as she WON the race at just over 38 minutes - WOW. Congrats, Serena!

Here is Megan and I just before the start (thanks, Meg, for letting me steal your picture!)

We started the race at 7:30 and started out at a good pace, even with that huge hill. The course took us through beautiful neighborhoods, which made for great scenery every mile. I found about 45 homes I'd like to buy!

The hills continued the entire race - I'm not sure there was even one flat section! But we kept going and pushed each other up the hills (not literally of course!). Our pace varied a bit each mile but once we hit mile 8, I told Megan to start kicking it in and to try and catch my friend John who had just gone past us! We didn't quite catch him but we did speed up and finished super strong. Megan had an awesome kick at the end, and we finished at 1:30:14, at a 9:01 pace! A great finish and we really did well with the hills and the wind.

The post-race party was great - lots of good food, hula dancers, and this guy: (again, thanks Megan for the pic!)

Thanks, Megan for running with me - you are a great racing partner!! And congrats to my friends:
  •  John who ran a great race and finished at about 1:29
  • Dan who was 10th overall, 2nd in his age group and ran 1:02 with a new PR!
  • Amber (who has been dealing with yucky shin splints but still did amazing!) and her husband Brian on great 5k races!!
Way to go and congrats to everyone who raced!

I headed home to see the fam and got some yard work done too. We then headed out to German Park in Ann Arbor to meet up with my parents and some wonderful friends. And check out this awesome lady - Yes, she is chugging beer out of a bucket, while standing on the table, at, oh, about age 80!!

Here is a group shot of all of us (I did my best setting up the timer!)

A great night out with great friends who we don't see nearly enough. Thanks to everyone who met us out there!

Today could be a long day, as I got no sleep since Julia decided she did not want to sleep at all yesterday and barely last night. She was up later than we were which is never a good thing.
Hopefully we'll take her to the park after Rob gets back from biking with my dad. I need to get a work out in to get back on my training schedule - especially on the bike since I won't have it while I'm in Florida next week.

Here is a quote I found, although not sure who said it. I love this.

Have a wonderful rest of your weekend!

Friday Fun Fact Day!

Good morning!
I hope everyone has had a good week and is looking forward to the weekend. Any big plans?

The weather is pretty crappy here today but I'm going to hopefully take Julia to the park to play with some friends (if the rain holds off) later this morning. Failing that, we'll find something else fun to do indoors - maybe head to a mall playscape or Jungle Java (anyone out there been to this madness? It is great for kids but *wow* is it chaos!).

Rob has a golf outing for work all afternoon/evening so I'm taking Julia this evening to see friends we haven't seen in way too long and attend a fundraiser for a friend of theirs. Their daughter is 3 days older than Julia so the girls have been BFFs since birth! Can't wait to see them! Here are the girls when they were about 3 weeks old! (Julia is on the right)

Tomorrow Megan (her blog here!) and I are going to tackle the Solstice Run 10 Miler! Luckily the weather looks to be perfect for a race! I hope she can pull me through this one, and that my foot behaves. I'm looking forward to it - apparently they have a luau party after the race. Love that - should be a fun time. Here is the logo from the race - I think the finisher's medals look similar (motivation to actually finish, no?)
Later on in the day, we're heading out (kid-less, thanks to my niece Krystal for babysitting Julia!!) with friends to German Park in Ann Arbor. This is such a fun place where 3 times a summer they have a huge German party with beer, food and polka dancing. Um, yes please! We went 2 years ago and had a great time. They literally give you buckets of draft beer! Check out a photo from Google I found - see the guy in the blue shirt? That's the bucket they give you along with cups for everyone.
I'm really looking forward to it! Join us if you live in the area! It starts at 4 on Saturday. Here is the link: http://germanpark.com/

Sunday - no big plans as of now which is always nice. Maybe we'll start painting our master bedroom which we've been putting off for, oh, 7 years now! Ridiculous I know. It's one of those tasks that is annoying and tough to do with a 2-year-old running around too!

So here is the fun fact of the day (via www.allrandomfacts.com):

Having five fridays in one month happens often, but the next time there will be five fridays in February won't be until the year 2036!

Have a great day and a fabulous weekend!

Turning a frown upside down

Good morning!

As I sit at my kitchen table trying to get a project done for work, watching Julia play with her Elmo toys, contemplating my blog topic for today, and the list goes on...I start to realize things are pretty good with life right now.

I've been in a bit of a down mood recently and I can't really pinpoint why, which is very frustrating to me. I go through some of these *funks* once in a while and let me tell you, they're not fun. I find myself on the verge of tears or ready to scream, and that's never good for anyone!

But as I sit here today, I'm determined to turn my funk around and smile...starting...NOW!

Here are a few things I am going to smile about today:
*My beautiful daughter Julia, who amazes me every day and is such a pleasure to be around. Here she is yesterday at the park:

*My husband Rob - who is working so hard on a lot of things in his life and I'm beyond proud of him and all the exciting things possibly to come for our family. I love you - sorry to be such a buzz kill recently!
Here he is with Julia on Father's Day - could this be ANY cuter?!

*My mom and dad - who are the best Gamma and Gampa in the world...and pretty darn good parents to me! And special thanks to my dad for being my triathlon coach!! I can only aspire to be like him when I'm in my 60s.
At Como Zoo Planetarium in St. Paul, MN

*My wonderful friends - all of whom have great things going on in life: 4th anniversary today, new babies, new jobs, new adventures, etc. I could go on for ever. Oh and to the new friends (and their kids) I've met - thank you for bringing me (and Julia) into your lives. And a BIG congratulations to my friend Megan who had an amazing day yesterday (read about it HERE!)

Here are the girls at sushi the other night (thanks, Megan, for the picture!)

*My health and so far meeting all of my racing goals in 2011. I've been working really hard this year and it's paying off. Of course, this ligament thing is frustrating me (part of my funk too) but I'll get through it. Still contempating another 70.3 in 7 weeks...thoughts?!

*The flexibility of my job, which allows me to take Julia to Florida next week for a little fun in the sun! It will be good to get out of town - change of scenery, some beach time and hanging out with our Florida family, the Stutzmans. Can't wait to see friends there too. And we'll be there for 12 days! Hopefully Rob can swing a weekend to come down, but work may get in the way of that (bummer)

So those are just a few things I can look to and smile. Here is a quote I found from Elbert Hubbard (never heard of him, but hey, he had a good quote!):

Positive anything is better than negative nothing.

I hope everyone has a great Thursday and make sure you take time to smile!

How to end the day on a positive note? Sushi with friends!

    Good morning!

I hope you all had a great Tuesday and your Wednesday is shaping up to be even better.

Yesterday was a long day but ended on such a good note that it almost made me forget about my earlier challenges!

Julia and I ventured to the gym yesterday morning which should have been an uneventful experience. However, because my brain was not functioning, I forgot to bring socks for her to wear in the child center, which is a big no-no. Blerg. So I debated what to do - I'm already here, I don't have time to go back home, I don't want to NOT work out...a-ha! I'll give her MY socks to wear and I'll go without. Let's give it a go. Well, she looked ridiculous with my socks on (too bad I don't have a photo) but I was told they'd seen worse on kids there! I can only imagine babies running around with their dad's socks on up to their knees - ha! Funny visual, actually.

So I went, sans socks, up to the dreadmill to get a run in (stupid rain). I opted to do 6.2 miles and oh, about 3.5 into the run, the blisters started...on both feet...in the same spot...and they hurt like hell. Oh and that lovely ligament on the top of my foot that I mentioned yesterday? Yea, that was screaming at me too. Awesome. I somehow struggled through the 6.2 miles in 48:31 - I cranked it up towards the end just to get done quicker!

I hobbled down to shower and change - wow, are my feet mad at me! Flip flops for the rest of the day for sure. My lunch plans got canceled (bummer) so I dropped Julia off at daycare and came home to work and do laundry (again, the exciting life I lead). But I knew come 6:30, it was SUSHI TIME!

I've gotten to know some great ladies through our gym - not only in classes but also the wonderful staff at the child care center. They are amazing and Julia loves all of them. So Megan (her blog here!)  , Julie, Amber (whose son and Julia I'm convinced will get married someday!) and I met in Canton for a fun evening out and a ton (literally!) of sushi for dinner! I have no idea why pictures aren't wanting to load, for me, but you can see the yummy food on Megan's blog!

We had such a great evening, chatting, eating, more chatting and more eating - we even ordered round 2 of sushi! Fantastic food at Izakaya Sanpei in Canton - go there if you haven't yet! It's on Morton Taylor, near Joy Road.

Even though we ate about a million pieces of sushi, I had a craving for ice cream...and knew Megan would be up for it too! Our brains think very much alike these days :) So we headed to the Twist and Shake - I got a turtle sundae, Megan opted for a vanilla cone with a twist of black cherry (I think). SO good and really topped off a great evening! What fun times have you had with friends recently?

Today I think I may rest my foot and see how it feels - maybe I'll hit the pool for a swim workout. Any big workout plans for you today?

Oh and another note - I'm contemplating another 70.3 - this time the Steelhead Half Ironman in August on the west side of Michigan. Eek! I'm trying to convince Rob that it's a good idea - we'll see if he bites! What do you all think I should do!?!?

I hope you have a great day and I leave you with this quote from the amazing Muhammad Ali:
Friendship... is not something you learn in school. But if you haven't learned the meaning of friendship, you really haven't learned anything.
Have a fantastic day! And thanks again for reading!

    A case of the Mondays...

    Good morning!

I hope you are all off to a great start today. Here in Michigan, it's rainy and gross outside - hard to get motivated or get moving today! But of course, my daughter decided she needed to be up at 7am (she's usually asleep until 9!) which makes for a long day for everyone!

Yesterday was such a blah day for me. I was still SO sore from the weekend's workouts that I did not feel like running or doing anything. I had good intentions - I was dressed and ready to go...and not so much. I got distracted trying to plan Julia's 2 year birthday party (um, excuse me - where did the time go!? How in the world is she 2??), which includes researching a bounce house to rent for the party. Anyone ever have one of these at their homes?
this is from Google, but essentially what I'm looking at having

I also had to change the date of her party because literally 2 people out of our family and friends were available on her actual birthday (July 30)! Everyone is out of town that week/weekend around here. So we moved it to the following weekend - which turns out to be a lot better for pretty much everyone, so a win-win overall I suppose!

I then decided to clean my closets. Oh yes. That is the exciting life I lead! While Julia was at daycare, I decided to take advantage of a couple of hours, got some storage bins and went to town. I ended up with 4 bags of clothes to dispose of. I'm considering trying to sell them on eBay but we'll see how that goes! I also finally stored my winter clothes in exchange for summer, as I think it's *finally* safe around here that it won't get cold again!

After that ordeal, it was time to pick up Julia, get dinner started, and head to Julia's swim lessons at our gym. She loves to swim and her teacher, Annie, is wonderful. Julia says all day "Kick, kick, kick with Annie!" It is so cute. Here's a picture of her from last week:
    I just adore her smile!

So needless to say, I took an off day from running/anything active, which was probably ok since my foot was still bothering me (seriously, stop it already, Mr. Ligament...you can go back to where you came from!).

Our friend Kevin came over for dinner and it was wonderful to catch up with him. He has some awesome things going on in his life and I'm so thrilled for him. Dinner was pretty good too - pasta with chicken and broccoli and an olive oil sauce - yumm-o.

Onto Tuesday - hoping to find my motivation again. Going to head to the gym shortly to either to a run on the 'mill or maybe do a spin class (since I haven't done one in about 3 months). Then heading out to meet my friend AJ and her beautiful 6 month old for lunch. Always great to spend time with her - she is one of my closest friends. And even more exciting about today - SUSHI with a few of the ladies!! I am really looking forward to it, as these ladies have been so great to me, especially MEGAN!!

I hope you have a great day and have some fun plans! I leave you with this quote by Robert Frost (I thought it was fitting for some things I've been trying to work through recently!)

The best way out is always through.

Have a good day and thanks for reading!

    The weekend that was...

    Happy Monday morning, all!

I was not online much this weekend so didn't get to my blog. I hope you had a great weekend - here is a quick run-down of the past couple of days -

Friday night - Impromptu night out with my sister-in-law Janene and some of her friends to celebrate a 40th birthday. The birthday girl, Beth, opted for The Melting Pot...has anyone ever been? I've been twice I think. It's quite an experience - we were there for more than 3 hours eating. But because it's fondue-based, you get little bite sized pieces of meat and veggies so it doesn't *seem* like you're eating as much as you are. The best part was the spicy cheese goodness and the strawberries dipped in peanut butter chocolate. Yumm-o. It was fun to get out, but it was certainly a long time to be just at dinner! I came home and was in a food coma!

Saturday - Rob went biking with his buddy Kevin so I took Julia to the gym so she could play. I decided last minute to do a class called Strictly Strength - basically a weight lifting class. With all my triathlon training, I hadn't done one of these classes in months so I'm sure my muscles were in shock. We did about eleventy billion weighted squats and lunges, then moved onto arms, back to legs, then more legs, then core. All I can say is OUCH. We came home after that and had lunch and played outside for a bit - I adore watching Julia play outside - she is a riot. Here is a picture of her sitting in my chair:

After playing a little more, I had to drive Julia around in the car to get her to nap. This girl never wants to miss ANYTHING! So she finally slept and I got things prepared to head to our friend Jeannie's party to watch the fireworks! We met up with my sister-in-law and our nieces there too - Julia was beside herself with excitement. She was asking all day about them! We played soccer and Julia learned what a hockey stick was too - adorable.

Maybe the first female in the NHL?? :)

TONS of kids, food and drinks which was a lot of fun. We left just as the fireworks were starting, as traffic tends to be a bear when they end. We watched them from the car and Julia was saying "Firework!!" over and over - so cute.

Sunday - Happy Father's Day! Rob actually went and met my dad to go biking at the park so I again took Julia to the gym. Ended up running on the lovely treadmill for 6.2 miles (49:03 was my time - not bad but WOW was I sore from Saturday!!). I've been having some issues with my left foot too - my dad tells me it is a ligament that is overworked so I really need to watch that. It starts to get really painful after a run, just while walking. Great. Just great. I've been icing so we'll see what happens. I'm doing a 10 mile race on Saturday - I hope to be ok for it!

We spent the day hanging out outside with Julia, watching her play. Her new thing is to say "1,2,3, GO!" and then run as fast as she can. Adorable.
Here is Rob and Julia with his Father's Day card (my 2 loves!)

Everyone thinks she looks like him - what do you think?

We then went to Ann Arbor to meet up with my mom and dad and go to Top of the Park, a summer festival they have every year. Julia was not in a great mood, so it started a bit rough but she rallied! We all got food and settled in to suffer through "listen" to the band that was playing - I hate to say it, but they were horrible. Like, really bad. We made the best of the situation, but ended up heading back to my parents' house fairly early for cake and ice cream and for Julia to play with their cat, Marble. Here is my dad and Julia:

She was trying to brush his hair with the cat's brush - ha!

All in all, it was a fun, relaxing day and weekend. After watching my mom and dad play with Julia, I always think of part of a Jimmy Buffett song:
I'm growing older, but not up!
So true...I hope all of you had a good weekend and celebrated the dads in your life!

Until next time, here are some questions:

    1. How was your weekend?
    2. Any races coming up?
    3. What is something you do to give yourself a boost if you're down?

    Friday, June 17, 2011

Hey, it's Friday! And does pulling weeds count as a workout?!

    Happy Friday, everyone!

It seems like this week has been about 2 weeks long - not sure why but had a tough few days in there, especially yesterday. Luckily I feel a bit better today but still not 100% myself. Ho-hum. Guess there will be days like these sometimes...will do my best to just get through it!

After the internet debacle yesterday (which Rob fixed for me - turns out the router and modem cables weren't connected right - oy), and feeling generally crappy, I needed to do something to try and improve my mood. So I took Julia out in the stroller and did a slow recovery run/walk after the rain cleared. My legs were screaming at me (didn't think I was that sore after my triathlon!) so we took it really slowly. But it was good to be outside and Julia enjoys being on the move too. After that, we went to get Chinese food (massive craving) and visit the kitties and fish at the pet store down the street. It was all I could do to get Julia out of the store without buying a cat! (Note: I probably would have if Rob wasn't so deathly allergic to cats!) I think my entire house was out cold before 9:45pm - yes, I will fully admit I'm old

Today I babysat my neighbors' 17-month old, Elizabeth all morning. Once Julia woke up, the girls were a riot playing together - I really enjoyed watching it. They imitated each other, chased each other around and then spent time chasing after Maverick (our 6-year-old lop rabbit! A story for another day...). I'm honestly not sure how moms with 2 or more kids close in age do it! Kudos to all of you! I was exhausted after playing referee with toys (of course, Julia wanted the ONE toy Liz was playing with), making sure no one went up the stairs or got into anything they shouldn't. I didn't sit down the entire time...but it was fun. And Liz's mom Ann so kindly brought me my favorite, Jimmy John's, for lunch as a thank you- love it.

I opted to take Julia out for another run before we had lunch - went about 3.2 miles in just over 24 minutes. It was hot and she was heavy to push on the dirt road by our house. Once Julia went for a nap, I mowed the lawn and weeded...that counts as additional exercise, right!? We have a big yard - honestly we do!
Here is Julia checking out the flowers - she kept trying to pick some and hand them to me as a gift. She's so sweet, but I'd like to keep the flowers IN the ground, sweetpea!

So now I'm finally relaxing while Julia finishes her nap and looking forward to an impromtu girls' night out with my sister-in-law Janene. Rob has Julia duties tonight while we head out for dinner and a movie - looking forward to it!

No huge plans this weekend, except hanging out with the 2 dads in my life - my amazing dad Ron and of course, Rob!

Anyone have any fun, exciting plans this weekend? HAPPY FATHER'S DAY to all of the dads in your life!!
Here is a cute quote I've always loved (author unknown):
Dad, you're someone to look up to no matter how tall I've grown.

Have a great weekend and thanks again for reading!

A triathlon on a Wednesday? Sure, why not!

    Hello all!

So I'm sitting in the library right now because the internet at our house has decided it is my arch enemy today. I have no idea why it isn't working, but I gave up just before I was ready to chuck the router through the wall. That would have ensured it would never work so I didn't do that :)

Last night, I raced in the Triceratops Sprint Triathlon at Island Lake State Park (which is an amazing place - for those of you in the Detroit area, go there if you've haven't yet). Yes, there are triathlons on Wednesday nights at 6pm! It's actually a series of 3, all named for dinosaurs (Pterodactyl is in July, T-Rex is in August). I love these races, as there are only 500 people total and they do a great job organizing it.

So my dad, The Bionic Man as my friend Scott likes to call him, raced this one too, 7 months to the day after having his right hip replaced!! He told me last weekend he was planning on racing which I was thrilled about. This is the only photo I took during the race since I didn't have my camera but here's me and Big Daddy O (as my best friend Randi calls him) before the race:

Love the dinosaur props, too! Looks like he's going to eat my dad's arm!

My friend Jon was there too and it was great to see him before the race - he kicked butt and was only 20 seconds shy of his PR in the run...and that was AFTER the swim and bike! Awesome job, Jon!

After encouragement from my dad and his friend Shawn (who is a crazy fast triathlete - he was 4th overall last night), I decided to go in the Elite wave. It is based roughly on your times from last year and I guess you get penalized if you are in this wave and don't finish faster than the target time of around 1:24. I figured, eh, why not? My best time last year qualified me so I tried it. And never mind you go in heat 1, about 15 minutes sooner than my age group start - meaning I would get done sooner!

The swim started and it sucked. It was so crowded at the beginning and I was kicked and swum over so many times. It took me about 150 meters to get to an open spot. Once I did, it was smooth sailing and I felt fine. Finished the 1/2 mile swim in 12:57 (over a minute faster than last year), and proceeded to fall on my butt while taking my wetsuit off at my bike! Ha - oh well! I got on my bike and took off. Saw my mom who was cheering me on which is always great encouragement for me.

The bike was good - really windy and a hilly course but it's pretty. I got passed by the eventual overall winner of the race, a couple of other women and a bunch of men. I just kept a good pace and finished the 12.4 mile bike in 36:49, more than 1:30 faster than last year! It was raining through most of the bike but luckily the pavement wasn't too wet. A quick transition, grabbed my visor (that I had to buy because I FORGOT my Spartan visor - ack!) and I was off on the run.

The rain continued to fall but it felt good as it was nice and cool. My mom was there again to wish me well and as I got on the course, Rob had Julia in the stroller and were there to run with me.  They pushed me through the first mile, which is straight up hill, and then left to go meet me at the finish. The run went well, I felt great the entire time and only 1 guy passed me. I actually came up to a man about 1/2 mile to the finish who asked me to push him through to the end, which I tried my best to do. We both finished with a good kick, my 5k run time was 22:19 (1:40 faster than last year!) and my overall time was 1:14:45. I was thrilled! Rob and Julia were there at the finish, braving the cold rain. (My mom opted to head home as she wasn't feeling well - wise move on her part!)

They got the results quickly and I was 10th female overall, out of 140 and 2nd in my age group, out of 24! I was thrilled and got a cool pair of no-tie shoe laces from Running Fit. Love those kinds of awards vs. a trophy that will sit and collect dust!

I waited to see my dad finish - he came in at 1:37 which was fantastic for him - I was so proud of him and he looked great!

By now I was frozen solid thanks to the rain. We were finally able to get our gear and head home for a much deserved ice cream sundae!

Had a great time at the race and can't wait for the next one in July!

My next few posts I swear will be more about "me" and less about racing, as I have about 9 days now before my next running race.

I leave you with this quote from Mary Lou Retton:
A trophy carries dust. Memories last forever.
So true, especially because I raced this one with my dad!!

    A few questions:
    1. What are some great races you've had for things other than the actual race (i.e. being with a friend or family, the scenery, the party afterwards, etc)
    2. Do any of your family members race?
    3. What is your favorite distance to race?
    Have a great day!

Why swim/bike/run 70.3 miles when you have a perfectly good car??

    Good morning!

Thanks so much to those of you who read my first post, and who are now following me! It's pretty cool for me that people actually care what I have to say...

As I mentioned yesterday, my friend Megan is the one who got me into this. She asked me to do a guest blog for her about my Half-Ironman last weekend. If you haven't seen it on her site yet, I'm going to re-post here. Fair warning: It's pretty long!

Let me start at the beginning. I was born in 1976…oh wait, a bit too far back, huh? Well, maybe not…I actually have been involved in sports all of my life – my mom and dad have been avid, active runners for 25+ years, dragging me along the way.
I grew up on swim, soccer and lacrosse teams but really started running and biking about 6 years ago. I did a triathlon in the mountains near Vail, CO several years before that but saying I was ill-prepared is like saying Donald Trump’s hair is weird.
After that, I decided to focus on running; competing in races ranging from 5k to marathons (I’ve done 4 full marathons). My dad has always been my coach through all of these, and he puts my training plans together and helps me through to the finish line (usually biking alongside me during the race too!).
My dad started competing in triathlons a few years back and I did one with him in 2008 (honestly, I was afraid he would drown in Lake Erie on the swim!! Alas, he did not, which is always a good thing). I caught the bug. I loved it and wanted more.
2009 was an off year for me, as I welcomed our daughter Julia in July. Needless to say, no races for me that year (until Thanksgiving’s Turkey Trot 5k).
But in 2010, I signed up for 7 triathlons – all sprint distance (1/2 mile swim, 12.4 mile bike, 3.1 mile run, give or take a little). I loved every minute of them and actually did quite well – was top 3 in my age group in all but one and actually finished 3rd overall in one! I caught the bug big time and couldn’t wait for the 2011 season.
In January, I decided hey, I did well at the sprint distance, why not skip right to a Half-Ironman?! Um, excuse me, Erika? You realize going from about 15 miles in a race to 70.3 is a bit of a jump, right? Eh, no biggie – I’ll figure it out as I go! So I signed up for the Racing for Recovery Half-Ironman June 5th in Monroe, MI. I’ve done 3 tris there before and it’s a great spot to race – super flat, really nice course and I like the organizations that put the race on. Perfect. I signed up in late January and called my dad and said “it’s go time – you’re going to coach me through this, right?!” “Yep,” he said. “You can do it.” (Famous last words).
My dad provided me with a 16 week training plan from Triathlete Magazine, with a few modifications for me. I started the training in early February and tried my best to follow every day to the T. I learned quickly that is virtually impossible given daily life as a mom who works part time and travels for work (and for pleasure). But I did my best.
Each week, I would re-arrange days as needed based on my schedule. If I knew I couldn’t do a 2 hour bike ride on a Wednesday, I switched it to Friday. If I couldn’t devote time for a 9 mile run, I did the best I could. I kept track on a great app through Facebook called IronApp – it helped me keep track of all of my activity on a calendar and I loved it. It also helped keep me honest with myself by posting it on my Facebook wall!
Fast forward to June 5th. Wow was I nervous wreck – I was actually sick-to-my-stomach nervous all week! The day was here and there was nothing more I could do to prepare. I had packed my bag the night before and was ready to roll.
I got all of my stuff set up in my transition area and began wandering around towards the swim start with my friends (several women I’ve gotten to know raced as well so it was great to have familiar faces with me). As we waited at the start, my dad showed up as did my friends Dan, Dannon and Nancy. So great to have a support crew! My dad gave me some final words of encouragement, said he’d catch me on the bike and sent me on my way.
With my dad before the swim start
The swim started and I was out in front of the pack (it’s a small race, only about 50 women, and about the same amount of men). I could see one other woman with me the entire time as we went through the 1.2 mile course in Lake Erie. Lots of rolling waves, but I just kept focused on the buoys in front of me. I started to pass a lot of the men (who started about 3 minutes ahead of us) and kept pushing. I felt great during the swim, and heard my dad shout “You’re 3rd!” as I exited the water. Awesome – I’ll take it!
I got up to my bike, peeled off my wetsuit, put my socks, shoes and helmet on and I was off. I had prepared by taping a peanut butter and honey sandwich to my handlebars and had 2 bottles full of water and Gatorade. That was perfect fuel for me and I felt great. Luckily it wasn’t hot yet. The bike was basically 3 loops for a total of 56 miles. I kept a good cadence throughout the bike – not going too hard because I knew I still had 13.1 miles of running ahead of me. I got passed by several women (including the top 3 overall finishers, I would learn later) and 2 of my friends. That’s ok – I knew it would happen, as most of them are incredible athletes who have competed in full Ironmans or ultra-marathons.
My dad caught me on the bike around mile 35 or 40. Right after that, my husband Rob with our daughter Julia caught up to me in the car. Rob would drive ahead; get out of the car with Julia holding a sign and take pictures as I rode by. It was so amazing to have them there – really helped give me a boost towards the end. My friend Maureen passed me with about 10 miles to go on the bike and said “hey, that’s great that you have paparazzi with you!” And she was right. I loved it. I think I slipped to 8th place after the bike – which was a-ok with me.
On the bike, with my dad in the rear view mirror!

As I got back to the park, I was ready to be off my bike. My neck hurt, my legs were sore and I was just tired of being on the bike overall. Into transition, I had a pack of friends waiting to cheer me on – it was so great. I changed into my running shoes, grabbed my number and my trusty Spartan visor (I won’t race without it – maybe it’s my superstition!) and I was off to tackle the 13.1 mile run.
I started off slowly to get my legs underneath me. I walked a bit after the first mile or so, just to try and get some fuel (via these great little gummies called Sharkies – they are like Gu except with consistency of gummy bears). I felt fine, but my legs were definitely tired.
As I passed through miles 3, 4 and 5, I started to realize I could do this. I walked through every water stop, ensuring I was hydrated enough. I did have a side stitch I was fighting, but I did my best to breathe through it. It never really went away so I just had to deal with it.
I came through lap 1 (around 6.2 miles) with no idea what pace I was going – I decided not to look at my watch which was probably better. My family and friends were there once again to cheer me on to my last leg of the race. I felt great and knew I was close to the end. I still walked throughout the 2nd loop but tried to run as much as I could. Once I saw mile 9, 10 and 11, I could taste it.
I glanced at my watch and saw that my goal time of 6 hours was more than feasible. I actually could do the last 2 miles in about 17 minute pace and still make it! Needless to say, I knew I had it. I had Britney Spears’s song “Keep on Dancing Till the World Ends” in my head most of the run – it has a great beat, by the way! I passed a few women along the way, but also got passed.
The finish of the run is up a fairly long hill but I could hear cheering and music at the finish line. I ran as hard as I could for the last .25 miles and crossed the finish line with a smile at 5:44:18, almost 16 minutes ahead of my goal!
    FINISH!!!
I was so thrilled as my friends and family greeted me at the finish. My dad was right there to congratulate me and make sure I was ok. I felt amazingly well and really the only complaint I had was sore feet (probably shouldn’t have worn racing flats, but rather my more cushion-y shoes) and tired legs. But I really felt great overall. I was just dumb-founded that I had finished it! 70.3 miles. Wow.
    My amazing support crew!!
I didn’t stick around for the awards because I figured there was no way I was top 3 in my age group.
After waiting to see some friends finish, I got my bike and belongings and headed to my car and headed to get my post-race treat – a Diet Coke!  I had been so excited about that!
And just like that – after 16 weeks of training and about 19 weeks of thinking about it, it was over. I was done.  I got online later and looked at the results, and low and behold – I was 3rd in my age group! Two out of the top 3 women were in my age group so they are taken out of the equation so I moved up to 3rd and was 12th overall! I wish I could have been top 10 but hey, for my first race like this, I was beyond thrilled.
I truly loved basically every minute of this experience (well ok, some of the training sessions were brutal but you get my drift). I am tempted to do it again soon but we’ll see where life takes me. As much as I would love to, I doubt I’ll ever attempt a full Ironman. But who really knows…now that I have the 70.3 bug, we shall see.
I encourage anyone who has thought about doing a triathlon to sign up for a sprint near you! They are so much fun and you will love it. I have my next sprint tri today (Triceratops Tri) actually and I can’t wait!

Thanks again for reading and have a great day!
